Rule 20 If You Don't Ask, You Don't Get

It does not hurt to ask for something.

The worse that can happen is that the person says no. This is true in any kind of negotiation, especially in dealing with your boss; ask for that raise or promotion. Even if you don't get it, your boss may admire your pluck and keep you in mind for future promotions. If there is something very important to you, it is good to get it out on the table.

However, do your research and be prepared to defend what it is you want and give reasons for why you should get it. Even if you think you deserve a raise or promotion, don't think it is going to happen without you initiating the conversation.

If you have a bad customer service experience, say at a hotel, ask for an upgrade, a new room or a free night's stay. You may be surprised to get it. Even after you have left the hotel, you can fill out the satisfaction survey they email you or mail the manager or CEO of the hotel with your problem.

The other party is not going to give you what you want unless you tell them what it is you want.
